When will the UK get the luxury of IPv6?
Posted by Ben Winn in Internet on June 15th, 2011

So we all know that IPv4 is the current standard developped in 1981 and will soon be rid off within the next few months or few years time, as some companies around the world have setup a trial usage of the IPv6 system whereas us people in the UK are still lacking behind using the IPv4 system because UK Internet Service Providers have not yet invested into the IPv6. When they built IPv4 they figured that an estimated 4.294 billion addresses would be enough, it turns out that this internet thing really caught on and there’s actually a shortage of IP addresses.

But why not use Network Address Translation (NAT) as a subsitute to the whole issue?!

NAT is a fantastic temporary solution, but that is all it really is. The internet is designed so that computers can communicate directly to each other around the world. In due time there will be no extra IP addresses and we will be forced to move to IPv6 as the internet protocol. Until that time, computers will be huddled in their own private networks behind NAT servers and gateways. The down side of this is that your computer, rather than having complete, unlimited access, incoming and outgoing to the internet, is being blocked by it’s gateway to the internet.

So the real question is when will the UK get the pleasure of the new system? Well to answer that in the most simple way is most likely within the next few months or as some sources say within the next two years. As of right now globably we are running out of addresses and the only way ISP’s & Carriers can keep on providing new users with IP’s is to jump aboard the IPv6 wagon if they don’t they will have servere issues within the next few years!
